Per our doctor's orders, we waited until she reached 5 months old to start feeding her solid foods--more solid anyway. We personally chose to wait because we were hoping her eczema would clear up more and not be confused with a food allergy (but I actually now think the eczema is induced by a reaction to cow's milk--but we'll see and find out more on that later) and also because we didn't want to deal with the extra supplies for feeding her while on vacation.
Claire's first introduction into foods besides breast milk was water. Every time I would drink from a glass she would eagerly reach toward the glass, and I eventually caved and let her try a sip or two. It went fairly well. The next instance was lemonade from a can. Bad choice. I think she cut something like her lip on the edge. Note to self: no cans. I got bolder as we went along and I finally gave her a bit of bean from a rice and bean burrito that I was eating for lunch. Claire ate the mashed black bean off of my index finger. Once it was gone, she pulled my finger back into her mouth expectantly. Poor girl. She loves food.
I went to the store and bought a whole bunch of different flavors of baby food--every flavor I could find actually. I got home and told Peter that I was ready to start feeding her solids and he happily exclaims, "You bought rice cereal?!" and I said, "no! should I have?". He said, after having been told that there's no going back, that we needed to start with rice cereal and then move on to better flavors.
She likes fruit a lot (except peaches for some reason). She also doesn't mind most veggies, but she gives the best faces when we give her peas or carrots!
Since her first introduction to "solid" foods, she has since warmed up to them a little bit. She still loves fruits, does pretty well with vegetables, but she doesn't like meats.
Her favorites are applesauce, pears, sweet potatoes, and squash.
She eats solid foods 3 times a day with rice cereal at breakfast and dinner. I've also been giving her a bottle with formula when we're out running errands or just once a day. She really likes it a lot. I think I may be out of a job soon! ;-)
This week I purchased one of those mesh bag feeding things that you put fresh, mashable foods in so babies can eat them without getting chunks that they could choke on. We tried raspberries yesterday, and she didn't like it because one of them was really tart.
She loves drinking water from her sippy cup, but she hasn't figured out that she has to tip the cup to get the water out. She just sucks on it. She'll get it soon enough though!
